We are actively recruiting PhD students. Admission is highly competitive. In general, to be eligible for admission to a postgraduate research degree, you need to have undertaken a significant research project or thesis in your previous university-level studies. Eligible candidates are encouraged to apply early, even before completion of your current qualifying degree.

Applications should be made through the University of Sydney application system.

General Entry Requirements

You must have completed the equivalent of one of the following: More details can be found here.

  • bachelor’s degree with first class honours (or equivalent).
  • master’s degree by research.
  • master’s degree by coursework with an independent research component such as a thesis, dissertation or research project with a minimum overall distinction average.
  • an equivalent qualification that demonstrates research experience, excellence and capability.

International applicants require to prove English language proficiency. You must have one of the following: More details can be found here.

  • IELTS: A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band.
  • TOEFL- IBT: A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing.
  • TOEFL-PBT: A minimum result of 565 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing.

Tuition Fees and Scholarships

Domestic Applicants (Australian Citizens or Australian Permanent Residents)

Eligible domestic Higher Degree by Research students may receive a Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset under the Australian Government’s RTP, which will cover the cost of their tuition fees. More details

The Research Training Program Stipend Scholarship (formerly Australian Postgraduate Awards) and the University of Sydney Postgraduate Awards (UPA) are offered to postgraduate research students undertaking a higher degree by research at the University of Sydney. in conjunction with the RTP/UPA, top-up scholarships and other awards are also available. International Applicants

The Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship scheme is funded by the Australian Government and provides tuition fees to top quality international postgraduate students who wish to enrol in a research degree at Australian universities. This scheme replaces the International Postgraduate Research Scheme. The RTP Fee Offset and Stipend Scholarship is very competitive and awarded to approximately 30 students each year. Applications are assessed on academic merit and research potential. In addition to the RTP Fee Scholarship, the University of Sydney awards an RTP Stipend Scholarship to all International RTP Fee Scholarship recipients. This provides a stipend/living allowance. For applicants from China, the University of Sydney and the China Scholarship Council (CSC) have entered a collaborative arrangement to provide research opportunities to high-quality research students from China. The USYD-CSC Postgraduate Research Scholarship is offered to prospective or current PhD students for up to 4 years. Applicants with a Conditional Offer of Admission to a PhD program are eligible to apply for the USYD-CSC Postgraduate Research Scholarship. Under this program, the University provides the Tuition fee scholarship to cover tuition fees; The China Scholarship Council provides: Living allowance as prescribed from time to time by the Chinese Government; Minimum cost international airfare direct from China to Sydney, and return on expiry of the program; Cost of the visa application fee to permit study at the University of Sydney; and Cost of Overseas Student Health Cover, if applicable. For visiting scholars from China: The University of Sydney–China Scholarship Council Visiting Scholar fellowship was established to permit research scholars from leading Chinese research universities to conduct research at the University of Sydney. The Visiting Scholar fellowships are extremely prestigious, and applicants should preferably be engaged in an established research program at their home institution. Successful applicants are expected to be based full-time at the University of Sydney for a period of one or two years.
